Smart Phone Market in India

A quick note on how Smart phone market dynamics in India.  I have referred IDC report for the stats.

Total number of mobile phones shipped in India during 2012 is 21,80,00,000 , roughly  around 22 Crore.

The market in India grew around 16 % in 2012 . World  wide Mobile phone market grew around 2-3 %  and the growth in India is at least 5 times faster, so India is and will be one of the prime markets for mobile vendors.

Total number of smartphones shipped in India in 2012 was  1,63,00,000 , around 1.5 core.
Growth in India  was 48% and smart phone market around the world grew around 36% .

Expected growth of smart phone market in India for 2013 is around 70% , this is twice as faster as compared to rest of the world, so  smart phone makers need to be in India and sell well in India, else they will loose one of the fastest emerging markets.

Interesting point to be noted is smart phones contribute to around 45% of total number mobile phones shipped in USA where as the smart phones contribute just to 9% of total number mobile phones shipped in India. There are two important things here

  • Company such as Nokia which is too big in feature phones , needs to stick to India for survival.
  • The growth potential for smart phones in India too huge, so its high time Apple starts considering Indian Smart phone market  seriously.
Most popular smart phones in India are in the ranges of 100 - 300$ , so to be success full in India the vendor needs to be price conscious and provide value for money. People are buying high end Galaxy and i Phones but 100 - 300 $ smart phone market seems to be  very strong .

Top five smart phone vendors in India , by the number of units shipped is as below
  1. Samsung
  2. Micromax
  3. Sony
  4. Nokia
  5. Karbonn
Its a pleasant to see Indian makers Micromax and Karbon being able to compete with Samsung, Sony , Nokia, LG, HTC ...

My two cents:
  • Smart phone market in India will grow very fast in 2013 , this year might be the best year for smart phone vendors in India.
  • 100-300 $ space  will grow fastest and mobile vendors need to cater to this space.

Well Known Smart Phone Operating Systems

I did a quick read up  and here is the list of Smart Phone OS according to their market share.

1. Android
  • Based On Linux.
  • Developed by Android Inc (acquired by Google) .
  • Released by OHSA (Open Hand Set Alliance , comprising of Samsung, Google, Motorola, LG, Intel, Dell, HTC and Sony).
  • Has a unbeatable world wide market share of 70%.
  • Popular phones : Samsung Galaxy , LG Optimus, HTC Desire, Motorola Razr and Sony Xperia.
2. iOS
  • Based on Unix.
  • Developed and released by Apple Inc.
  • Has a very good market share of 21%.
  • Popular Phone : Need not say :) It is "The  i Phone ".
3.  BlackBerry 10
  • QNX based, which is internally Unix based.
  • Developed and released by Blackberry (previously RIM).
  • Not so impressive market share of 3%, mostly because of enterprise and business  costumers I guess.
  • Popular Phone : Recently released Blackberry 10.
4. Windows Phone
  • Developed by Microsoft.
  • Most important vendor is Nokia
  • 2.5% market share . Sad to see Nokia which used to be biggest player in feature phone reduced to almost 2.5 %.
  • Popular Phone: Nokia Lumia
5. Tizen , Firefox and other Linux based OS
  • Developed by alliances between Samsung and Intel or by organizations such as Mozilla.
  • Trying to provide alternate options to Android.
  • 3 % market share altogether.
  • Not sure which is very popular phone.
My two Cents:
  1. Most of the Smart phone OS are either Linux or Unix based except for Windows.
  2. Android + iOS share 91% market share, and Nokia not doing any of these phones might not help it . Nokia needs  to capture consumers with out of box ideas, else it will have tough time.

Ethernet Switch Market Share - Is HP Second

At Hewlett-Packard I was told "HP is second in terms of market share in Ethernet Switch Industry" . I was surprised , to be honest I was like "Is It , when did this happen" . I never thought of HP as a significant player in switching industry.

I did some quick read up  and the truth is , yes HP is second in terms of market share. But the difference between 1st and 2nd is very huge , Cisco is 7 times bigger than HP in terms of market share.  Cisco has 63% , HP has 9.3% , and next top 3 players are Alcatel - Lucent (3%) , Juniper ( 2.7%) and Brocade (2.4%).

Seriously  Cisco has such huge dominance in Switching gears industry and this is really outstanding. I think competitors such as HP need to do something very different to beat Cisco and gain  substantial market share.

For consumers it is always good if there are multiple big vendors than having a monopoly , as monopoly reduces the consumer bargaining power drastically.

I have copy pasted the sector graph provided by the IDC report of Nov 2012 for Switch market share.

20 best mobile phones in the world today

The latest article by Tech Radar on best mobile phones is quite interesting. The list has changed considerably to what it was during August 2010, this shows the quick changes taking place in smart phone market and the stiff competition present in the smart phone market.

I observed that the Android Platform has been used in many of the best mobile phones .Eleven out of top 20 mobile phones use Android Platform, this shows growing clout of Android in Smart Phone Platforms. Apple's iOS , BlackBerry's Phone OS and Windows 7 are used in 2 phones each. Samsung's Bada has been used in one phone, similar is the case with Nokia's Symbian and Nokia's Maemo Platforms. The dominance of Android Platform based phones is strong among top 5 phones also this can be understood by the fact that best 4 phones in top 5 are based on Android and 1 of them is based on iOS.

If we see among Original Equipment Manufacturers HTC is leading with 6 mobile phones among top 20 , Samsung coming 2nd with 4 mobiles, Apple, BlackBerry and Nokia stand 3rd with 2 mobile phones each and LG , Motorola, Sony Ericson having one each. Apple and Samsung have one phone each among top 5 , where as HTC has three phones among top 5.
